Festival Calendar
One of the most attractive aspects of Ghanaian Cultural life is the traditional festivals and durbars which are held in all parts of the country throughout the year. Some major ones are as follows:-

Adae and Akwasidae – Ashanti Region; Kumasi, Adae Kesie or Big Adae festivals take place every five years. It is during this celebration that the golden Stool is brought out. Akwasidae is held every sixth Sunday.

Edina Buronya – Central Region

Elmina, a local version of Christmas

Bugum Festival – Northern Region

Walewale: Fiwe Carnival

March & April

6th March – Independence Day Parade – Accra, and all regional capitals.

Papa – Ashanti Region: A weeklong Papa festival is celebrated in Kumawu

Apoo – Brong Ahafo Region: Techiman, Nkoranza and Wenchi

Ngmayem – Eastern Region: Krobo Odumase and Somanya


Dipo – Eastern Region: Krobo Odumase, A Puberty festival

Aboakyer – Central Region: Winneba, it is one of the famous deer hunting festivals in Ghana.

June - Aug.

Damba – Upper West Region

Kundum – Western Region

Bakatue [Regatta] - Central Region: Elmina, it marks the beginning of the fishing season.

Asafotufiami – Greater Accra Region

Homowo [carnival] Greater Accra Region: This marks the celebration of victory over a severe historic famine.
Odambea – Central Region: Saltpond

Sept & Oct: Fetu Afakye [carnival] Central Region; Cape Coast

Kobine – Upper West Reg.Wa & Lawra

Odwira – Eastern Region.
Nov & Dec. Hugbetsotso – Volta Region, Angloga

Kwafie- Brong Ahafo Region: Dormaa – Ahenkro, Berekum and Nsuatre

Fiok – Upper East Region: Sandema. This is a war festival
